Exploring emotions through color, line, symbols and the tactile sensation of origami and collage facilitates communication. Non-verbal, second language learners and those with memory issues often find these groups liberating.
Poetry groups help residents open up about pain, dreams and precious memories. Group shares facilitate public speaking and boost confidence.

Chess Club requires volunteer at various skill levels. Groups should be arranged so that residents can learn the basics or advance their skills. Since this is a quiet game requiring concentration and patience, this game appeals to non-verbal and second language learners.

Karaoke Parties
Music engages both sides of the brain.
Memories can be accessed just by hearing a favorite song. Singing helps breathing, strengthens speech production, promotes relaxation, socialization and helps long term residents of hospitals and nursing homes bond.
Volunteers act as Masters of Ceremony, DJ and appreciative audience memgers.
Art and Poetry Groups
Chess Club
Lines, colors and symbols communicate more about hidden emotions when residents feel free to explore a variety of media. Whether they chose a 64 color box of crayons, a fresh tube of paint of a pile of soft clay, art groups allow non-verbal, second language learners and speech impaired patients a chance to express their feeling and tell us a story.
Poetry groups begin with picture prompts, a work bank, a question and some instrumental music for inspiration. Volunteers encourage and sometimes read the poem aloud.
Chess is probably the only game where you need to slow down to gain the advantage. It teaches focus and patience and sharpens observational skills and memory.
Volunteers must know how to play and be willing to teach and coach the game. Proficiency levels of volunteers should vary to meet the need of the residents.

The Elevator Pitch
The Elevator Pitch
Before offering any of our programs to a non-profit, do a little homework first. Find out about the demographics, the language needs for their population and the special skills of your volunteers. Then get ready to write an elevator pitch and few answers to their follow up questions. Get a stopwatch and practice keeping your monologue somewhere between 60 and 90 seconds.
Recruiting Volunteers
Although some of our programs are family-friendly, the main group in your volunteer group must be over 18 years old.
Verification of volunteers is crucial and most agencies will require volunteers to agree to a background check. Discuss this during initial meetings with the host agency and volunteers.
Although you want to be as inclusive as possible, please post in your description for each project whether the location meets or does not meet ADA standards.
The easiest ways to recruit volunteers may be university campuses, art schools, music schools, and regional theater companies.
Confidentiality
Fidelity to the programs is the first step to success and to creating a partnership with the non-profit host. Trust begins with confidentiality. It is imperative that each and every volunteer signs a statement of confidentiality every three months.
Most host agencies will have their own confidentiality forms but they will also welcome the chance to review your confidentiality agreement, use it as an additional document and keep it on file for their records.
It is easy to find templates for confidentiality agreements online and through low cost or pro bono legal services.
Volunteers must understand the gravity of breaking this contract before signing.
Additionally, permission slips for taking photos or exhibiting or posting any artwork or poems that are products of the creative groups.
